Statistical Design and Modelling for Small Sample Sizes

The ongoing hot discussions of “Frequentists vs Bayesians”, how to solve the replication crisis and the problems of the p-value, may leave early stage researches in agony of choice among statistic approaches. Especially since in psychological and biological studies, they are often faced with the challenges of limited sample sizes, repeated measurements, nested data and cofounding factors. Statistical modelling that goes beyond the traditional null hypothesis significance testing offers great opportunities. With practical training in R and lectures from pre-eminent experts participants of this summer school will increase their ability to judge on the right approach for their own data, which they are encouraged to bring to work with! In addition, they will be able to engage with lectures and our local researchers in a public panel discussion on ”how to fix statistics” and in a relaxed atmosphere of social events.

MAIN TOPICS

Statistical Modelling for small sample sizes: pitfalls and limitations, experimental design and interpretations, data visualization

Social relationship analysis: dynamic approaches

Outlook on further methods: adaptive trials, Bayesian approaches, simulations, GEE

Social events: Dinner at a “Heurigen”, bird watching excursion and barbecue at the Danube

LECTURERS

Roger Mundry, MPI EVA Leipzig

Christof Neumann, Université Neuchâtel

Robin Ristl, Medical University Vienna

VENUE

University of Vienna, Campus (Altes AKH), Lecture Hall C1/Seminar Room 3, Spitalgasse 2.

REGISTRATION

Basic knowledge on how to use R is required. Due to the maximum number of 30 participants an informal registration with a letter of motivation should be directed to Sigrid Hager (vds.cobene@univie.ac.at) by 30th June 2018.

FEE, TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION

The fee of € 100,00 (incl. tax) includes lectures, lunches, and coffee-breaks. VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows can apply for reimbursement. Social events –except the “Heurigen” – are not included in the fee or topic for reimbursement. Accommodation and travel has to be organized by the participant.

ORGANIZATION

Responsible for this student organized summer school are the following VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows: V. Beeck, S. Bettoni, C. Blum, F. Haiduk, K. Wenig, T. Rössler, S. Karl, supported by the VDS CoBeNe organizational assistant Sigrid Hager.
