Become a PhD candidate in the VDS CoBeNe!

For ambitious young researchers holding a Bachelor or Master's degree, there are several ways to achieve a paid praedoc position at the VDS CoBeNe. Usually it will be through one of our advertised and topically open VDS CoBeNe uni:docs calls, or through one of the individual PhD calls specified by the responsible group leader. 

1. VDS CoBeNe Individual Calls

Typically the topic of the offered praedoc positions is given due to the expertise of the supervisor and/or the topic of a specific grant or project. Usually the duration or this position is 3 or 4 years.


2. VDS CoBeNe uni:docs PhD

Highly motivated students interested in the fields of Psychological Science, Behavioral & Cognitive Biology, Neuroscience, and the Cognitive Humanities can apply with their own research proposal. Successful candidates will be supervised by one of the CoBeNe Faculty Members and employed at the University of Vienna for 3 years.

Admission process

The application and admission process is as follows:

  1. Applicants must register and open an u:account here.
  2. Applicants must submit the requested documents by the deadline online here.
  3. The completeness of all submitted application documents is checked by the assigned administrative office. If necessary, documents with a deadline will be requested subsequently.
  4. Suitable applicants are invited to an interview by the advertising supervisor or by the administrative office. Interviews will be performed in person, or via video-conference.
  5. The advertising supervisors and/or an assigned jury select the best matching candidate in a transparent and standardized assessment.
  6. The DSPL/Vice DSPL decides whether the applicant is qualified for doctoral studies and if so, under which conditions (referring to curricula and ECTS).
  7. In case of a positive decision and with the confirmation of supervision, the selected candidate is admitted to doctoral studies at the University of Vienna as well as the VDS CoBeNe. For further steps see PhD process.
