PhD-Seed Grants - OPEN

The VDS CoBeNe Seed grant ist intended to help PhD candidates with no or not much financial support from third party funds of their supervisors. The goal is to support conference presentations, fill knowledge gaps and produce research suitable for publication in academic journals. Currently the call is open throughout the semester unless the seed budget is spent.

All VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows are eligible to apply i) for travel support or ii) for material and/or labor support with the given forms. The decision upon the grant allocation will be made on an individual base by the (vice-) DSPL for each research foci: Psychological Sciences I Behavioural & Cognitive Biology I Neuroscience I Cognitive Humanities

Seed Grant Selection Criteria

  • Clear and concise description of the proposed measure
  • Decisive arguments for the need of the measure within the PhD lifetime
  • Support and specification of the importance of the measure
  • Compliance with the regulations for PhD candidates (FÖP, doctoral thesis agreement, annual reports, TACs)

Up to € 2.000,- for direct costs, including personnel (e.g. participants fee, technician) and non-personnel costs, including event travel & accommodation, materials and supplies.

PhD-Organized Summer School 2022 - NOT OPEN

The VDS CoBeNe invites CoBeNe PhD fellows to submit proposals for PhD-Organized Summer Schools
integrating both academic and social components for junior researchers. The mid-term goal is
to develop annual summer schools with a specific topic, targeting CoBeNe PhD fellows and affiliated
international junior researchers.

All VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows are eligible to apply as head of a project proposal. The project group requires at least two VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows, ideally from separate research foci: Psychological Sciences I Behavioural & Cognitive Biology I Neuroscience I Cognitive Humanities

Proposal Selection Criteria
Creative ideas coupling research activity and networking will be prioritized, keeping the main objective on academic training and hands-on-experience. Priority in proposal content:

  • Innovativeness and originality of the proposed summer school program
  • Feasibility of the project including a budget- and time plan

Up to € 15.000,- for direct costs, including personnel (e.g. trainer, technician) and non-personnel costs, including event travel & accommodation, rent for location, materials and supplies.

Topics can range from exploring new paradigms in theory and practice, from field methods to statistics, or any kind of relevant training and not to forget the importance of social events.


  • Proposal not longer than 2 pages or 3.000 characters describing the aim of the planned summer school
  • Project team of at least two VDS CoBeNe PhD candidates from different research foci
  • Budget- and time plan
  • Support letter from your supervisor(s)
  • Deadline for the online application is 30.1.2022, 12:00 AM.

VDS CoBeNe Completion Grant - NOT OPEN

With the dissertation completion fellowships the VDS CoBeNe supports junior researchers of all disciplines in the last phase of their PhD. It is the aim of the fellowships that the PhD-projects should be finalized and submitted within the funding period of up to six months.

Timeframe: The online application is possible for winter semester from August 15th to September 15th, for summer semester from January 15th to February 15th. Any month of the particular semester can be chosen as starting date of the fellowship. 

Target Group: VDS CoBeNe PhD fellows in the finalization phase of their PhD (data collection should be done, publication writing proceeding). 


  • The completion and submission of the PhD-thesis should be expected within the duration of the fellowship of up to 6 to max. 12 months. 
  • Very good academic records (seminars, publications, conference presentations) 
  • A statement from your supervisor with his/her commitment to support your finalization phase
  • No parallel funding from the University of Vienna for the time of the fellowship
  • Compliance with the regulations for PhD candidates (doctoral thesis agreement, all annual reports, and TACs)


Application documents: 

  • Research proposal of the PhD project with detailed information on the current stage of work and a timeline for the completion of the PhD, max. 10 pages. It has to be convincingly conveyed that the PhD-project can be completed within the duration of the fellowship (SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME__research proposal)

  • CV including list of publications, max. 3 pages (SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME__CV)

  • Support letter of your supervisor (SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME__support letter supervisor)

  • Transcript of records in one file (SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME__transcript of records)

  • Doctoral Thesis Agreement and all Annual Reports (SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME__thesis agreement and annual reports)


We would expect a completed online application form. The documents as pdf attachments to the online application form, not larger than 2 MB, have to be named: SECOND NAME, FIRST NAME_(document see in brackets above). All documents have to be written in 11 pt and 1,5 line spacing. Only complete applications will be considered for funding.

Amount: € 1.125 per month (insurance and university student fee is not included and needs to be paid by yourself)

Duration: until you submit your doctoral thesis - maximum up to 6 months 

Start: at any time given from you, within the forthcoming semester after the application
