Into Science Retreat 2024

 When: 27.05.-29.05.2024

 Where: Illmitz, Lake Neusiedl

The second Into Science Seminar Retreat again took place in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Neusiedl. During the retreat, the 20 PhD candidates had the opportunity to get to know each other, discuss what science is, exchange their scientific motivations, learn about responsibilities in supervision and informal backgrounds of scientific careers. It is particularly important for young researchers to be able to present their research and themselves in different contexts. The doctoral candidates have seen and practiced different presentation formats, e.g. advertising their project in the form of a poster (poster pitch), presenting their scientific project in a short talk or convincing others of their own skills and selling themselves in an interview. The projects ranged from the cellular investigation of brain asymmetry in fruit flies, to various behavioral and cognitive biology projects such as cheetah contact chirps or social behavior in japanese macaques, to the perception of complexity in images or language, to resilience & nature or large language models (LLMs) and the replication crisis.

A multi-faceted cycle tour through the magical Lake Neusiedl - Seewinkel National Park was the highlight of the retreat. After an introduction to the vast, steppe-like landscape, which enchants with its scenic diversity, such as shallow salt lakes or “Lacken”, mosses, meadows, pastures and the Lake Neusiedl with its dense reed belt and its diversity of species. Passing white herons, geese, various duck species and unique birds, a herd of rare white donkeys was seen and finally a white-tailed eagle was spotted in the distance. After the exciting bike tour, there was still enough time for a relaxed get-together at the hotel.
