When: 06.11.-07.11.2024

 Where: Hirschwang an der Rax

The first "CoBeNe Finalizing your PhD Retreat", held on November 6th & 7th 2024, was a resounding success, bringing together doctoral candidates and faculty speakers for two enriching days of academic exchange and career planing. The event took place in the tranquil setting of Hirschwang an der Rax, surrounded by a beautiful mountain landscape in brilliant autumn colors.

The event aimed to provide the 20 PhD candidates with both targeted support for completing their dissertations and space to reflect on their broader career aspirations. The first day focused on strategies to successfully finalize their PhD projects. Candidates reflected on their ongoing research, receiving valuable feedback from faculty and peers on key topics such as effective time management, structuring dissertations, and preparing for the finalizination of the thesis. Following these workshops, participants embarked on a refreshing autumn walk in the picturesque mountain surroundings. The hike offered not only an opportunity to enjoy the stunning views and fresh air but also a chance for informal networking and idea-sharing in a relaxed setting. Participants exchanged tips and outlined personalized action plans for completing their PhDs. Concluding faculty members shared insights from their own academic journeys, offering practical advice on overcoming common challenges in the final stages of the doctorate.

The second day shifted focus to rethinking one’s skills and planning for the future. Morning workshop explored topics like identifying transferable skills, exploring diverse career paths, and setting long-term professional goals. A reflective exercise encouraged participants to assess their strengths and align their career plans with personal values and aspirations. The day concluded with a special session featuring personal insights from faculty members about career planning. Faculty shared stories about their own career journeys, including the challenges they faced, the decisions that shaped their paths, and the lessons learned along the way. Their reflections offered a rich perspective, inspiring candidates to consider a variety of professional trajectories and encouraging them to remain adaptable and open to opportunities. The retreat concluded with a reflective session, where participants shared their key takeaways and with a relaxed and adventurous walk along the Schwarza to Payerbach train station.

We thank all participants and faculty members for their contributions to this inspiring and productive retreat. We look forward to future events that continue to support our academic community.
